Illustrator Hannah Buckman was born in London in 1992. Her father is from Ghana and her mother is from the United Kingdom. She studied at Camberwell College of Arts and completed her Drawing Year at the Royal Drawing School in London in 2021. Since then, she has been working as a freelance illustrator. Numerous magazines and newspapers have published her work, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Harper’s Magazine and gal-dem, an online and print publication dedicated to the culture of people of color. Liv Little, the initiator of gal-dem, established the online format to counter the lack of diversity in mainstream media.
Hannah’s drawings have a distinctive style all their own. She deliberately uses distorted proportions, amplifying gestures and other expressions of body language. For example, in her drawing Everyone at the Party is Shy, the guests have tiny heads and huge hands, and the viewer immediately understands how these figures seem to be feeling right now. Hannah’s illustrations communicate much more than outward appearances: They reveal the characters’ personalities and states of mind.
